On Wednesday, 11th of November 2020 South Africa received sad news that shook the country about the passing of the outgoing Auditor-General (AG) Kimi Makwetu. As the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) we write this letter to express our sincere condolences to the late AG’s family, friends, and the office of the Auditor General South Africa. The late AG Kimi Makwetu has left a great legacy in the public sector accountancy and auditing. The industry has lost a remarkable man.
As the professional body with a role to serve the public sector and society by advancing public accountability and auditing we commend Mr. Makwetu’s commitment in fighting corruption through his implausible ethical leadership. The late AG was and will always be an inspiration to our professionals. We applause his selfless commitment in mentoring young professionals in the industry.
His role in society had a positive impact as he preached about accountability and transparency. The country observed as he held public sector officials accountable, especially those who were involved in mismanagement of finances in municipalities. He brought significant change in the Auditor-General’s office during his tenure. He emphasised on wasteful and irregular expenditure of government spending and repowered seeing some change. We all remember the AG’s latest work at the UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) for mismanagement of funds.
The passing of the AG Kimi Makwetu is a great loss for the country and the world, in particular after he was recently announced to serve in the United Nations’ Independent Audit Advisory Committee (IAAC). May his soul rest in eternal peace.
